Sell at a price with taxes included

How to capture a product at the final price the client pays, let Control Total break the taxes down from it, and keep that price when a rate changes.

Some products sell at a fixed final price — $5,000, taxes and all — and how much of it is tax is your business, not the client's. Price with taxes included lets you capture that final price on the product and have Control Total work out the price before taxes for you.

When the option appears

It is on the product form, in the row of toggles, only while your team has taxes: fiscal invoicing set up, or Activate taxes on in Settings. Without taxes there is nothing to include, so the option is not shown.

Turn it on

  1. Open the product in Products and inventory → Products.
  2. Turn on Price with taxes included. The note under it reminds you: the price you enter is the final price, and the taxes are broken down from it.
  3. In Price, enter the final price the client pays — 5000, not the price before tax.
  4. Save the product.

The same goes for the prices you capture for each price list on that product: they are final prices too.

What a document does with it

Add the product to a quotation, a sell order or a fast order and the line totals the final price you captured. With 16% VAT, a $5,000 product shows:

Subtotal Taxes Total
$4,310.34 $689.66 $5,000.00

Behind those figures, the price before tax carries as many decimals as it needs, up to six, for the line to land exactly on $5,000.00 — whatever your Decimals for Productos says. See How a line adds up, to the cent.

Withholdings and fixed-amount taxes are taken into account too: the line totals the final price whatever taxes the product carries.

A line discount works from there. A fixed discount of $0.01 on the Final price with tax leaves the line at $4,999.99.

If the product's price is editable (Is Price Editable), the price you edit on the line is the final price as well.

The final price stays put

The final price is the figure that counts. If a tax rate on the product changes, or you remove one of its taxes from a line, the line still totals the final price and the breakdown moves: more or less tax, less or more price before tax.

Where it does not apply

  • Purchase orders price a line at the supplier's cost, which never includes taxes. The option has no effect on them.
  • If your team turns taxes off, the option is no longer shown and the product's price is read as a price without taxes again. Turn taxes back on and the option is there, as you left it.
  • Turning the option on or off changes the lines you add from then on. Lines already on a document keep how they were priced.

On a fiscal invoice

A concept made from one of these lines, or added to an invoice from one of these products, totals the final price. Its unit value carries up to six decimals and its subtotal, taxes and total are in cents.
